A letter from Pastor Tim to parents of confirmation age youth
To parents of potentially confirmation age youth,
You are receiving this letter because, according to our records, you have a youth who is entering 7th, 8th or 9th grades and is ready to begin confirmation or was participating in confirmation this past year. If, after reading the letter, you find it does not pertain to you, please feel free to disregard it.
Recently, you should have received a letter outlining what Sunday mornings will look like at Holy Trinity. We hope there will be something, on every Sunday, for everybody.
But what won’t be on every Sunday, between the services, will be confirmation. After talking with parents and seeing how the spring went, this time does not seem to be the best time to try and instruct our young people in the Christian faith. Youth were very irregular in their attendance and there never seemed to be enough time to enjoy what we were doing. It frequently seemed rushed or we were never able to fully have the youth’s attention as sometimes people were late, had to leave early, or simply couldn’t make it at all. As a parent to 3 youth, I understand how difficult it is to make it to church every Sunday. Therefore, I propose the following for a new confirmation format.
Meet one Sunday a month. (Specific Sunday is TBD.) Meet for 2 hours, 5-7pm. Make dinner together. Parents are asked to participate.
I believe with this new format, it will…
Allow people to fit regular attendance into their schedules Enable us to get to know each other better through casual and authentic conversations as we make dinner together Give parents the opportunity to meet each other and have time to discuss the joys and struggles of raising youth Give parents the opportunity to learn about their own faith as they pass it on to their child Make possible the opportunity to participate in service projects and different fellowship activities Equip us to learn about the love of God and have fun while doing it!
Our first meeting will be Sunday, Sept. 23rd, from 5-7pm.
We will meet at Holy Trinity and make pizza together. During our time, I will go over the other requirements and expectations for confirmation and answer any questions. I also hope to have a calendar with the rest of the confirmation dates so you can get them in your calendar ASAP.
As I have said before, there is no magic program that will ensure our children will have a life-long faith. We will try some things that will work. We will try some things that will fail. The point is that we will be open and honest about our faith, teach the basics, ask questions and share doubts while helping each other see how it affects our lives and how, through our faith, we can affect change in the world.
In an email, please let me know the age and grade of your child and who will be attending with your child on Sunday, Sept. 23rd from 5-7pm. My email is email@example.com
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email or call me. I am excited about the future and hope you are also.
