The
History of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
as
written by Marie Edin, Church Historian
Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church officially became a reality
the morning of Sunday, October 27, 1957 at a Rite of Inception. Prior
to October 1957 church services were held in the Chapel of the Middle
Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, NH.
After the arrival of our Board Missionary and Developer, Dr. H. Allison
Linne in May 1957 (Mother's Day), arrangements were made with school authorities
to use the Wentworth Acres School in Portsmouth, where we had the use
of the auditorium for church services, and the classrooms for Sunday school.
Our mission church was named Holy Trinity. "We as Lutherans believe
in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, three in one.
We believe in the Bible as the Word of God." At a congregational
meeting the afternoon of October 27, 1957 the church name was officially
changed to Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
On a rainy Sunday afternoon in the fall of 1958 ground was broken for
our church building, and on June 14, 1959 our new church was dedicated
at a Service of Consecration.
More space was needed (Holy Trinity was growing). In 1962 we added on
to the first unit and in 1980 (still growing!) Holy Trinity was expanded
and renovated. The many renovations included the installation of a 250
sq ft Kalwal Sunlite solar wall.
Conversations of a possible merger between Resurrection Lutheran Church
and Holy Trinity began in the summer of 1994. The two congregations were
officially united on Sunday, November 27, 1994. On February 5, 1995 the
congregation endorsed for general purposes only, the general architectural
concept for addition and site changes purposed by the Building Committee
and architect. It was further voted that LLMS be used for capital fund
raising. On June 11, 1995, the congregation accepted the building project
for $736,850.
On a warm sunny day, June 18, 1995 ground was broken for the new building
project. With much anticipation and pride our first service was held in
the new sanctuary on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1995.
On September 24, 2000, the Reverend Linn Opderbecke was installed as
the seventh and present Pastor of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
